Rotate versus flip

Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre in 90° steps; a phone photo that opens sideways usually needs a 90° or 270° turn. Flipping creates a mirror image, horizontally (left becomes right) or vertically (top becomes bottom). The two can be combined in one pass, so you can turn a picture and mirror it before downloading.

When you need each one

• Rotate 90°/270°: fix sideways photos and scans taken in the wrong orientation.
• Rotate 180°: correct pictures that came out upside down.
• Flip horizontal: correct mirrored selfies, or mirror a design for printing on transfers and some products.
• Flip vertical: create reflections or fix inverted scans.

Note that flipping text produces reversed letters, so avoid it on images where text must stay readable.

Quality and next steps

Turning in right angles and mirroring only rearrange existing pixels, so the picture is not resampled and does not lose sharpness. If the horizon is slightly tilted rather than turned by a full right angle, crop the image after rotating with Image Crop, which also offers left and right rotation.
